Memoirs of A 70's Sneaker Wearing Dad (<--click)

Welcome to my groovy little "70's" Blog. This is an online diary highlighting my coming of age memories in the 1970's, my journey as a entrepreneurial dad and my observations of life today.

My hope is that this will be a journal of my wacky experiences that can be looked back on by my daughters, my family and my friends. Read with amusement and enjoy my take on being happy, finding things to live for and the funny side of parenting.

It Doesn't Pay To Get Rich In America

It's April 15th, tax day. I would like to first congratulate almost 50% of the people in the United States that do not pay any federal taxes at all. Bravo! Well done! Thanks for contributing.

To the other 50% that pay almost 100% of the US taxes, I hope you are enjoying your soaking.

To the top 1% of tax payers that pay 33% of all US taxes, I ask... why do you live in the US?

The United States tax system is a joke. It punishes people for working hard, taking risks and helping create jobs. The top 50% of wage earners pay more in taxes with each increase in profit while the lower 50% are getting additional tax returns for being poor.

This is the United States people. The land of opportunity and freedom. Get off your ass, work hard and pay some freakin taxes. I'm telling you, us "rich" folks have had just about enough of carrying the load and supporting this government. What do we get in return? Turn on the TV today and see where the politicians are wasting our trillions of dollars.

That wasn't millions, it wasn't billions, it's now trillions. I'm supposed to want to work hard, take risks and create businesses just so I can get raked over the coals in higher taxes and then watch the government WASTE all of the money I earned and sent to them?

Oops! Did I veer off into a rant? I apologize to anyone reading this. It's just a little tough to sit here calmly and feel good about paying higher taxes just because I busted my ass last year and made more money. I'm not exactly sure what the incentive is for trying to earn more profits this year. Humm... maybe I'll stop working, head to the beach and let the government pay me for a while.

The Nasty Evils Of Self-Employment

Self-employment has so many perks that every individual should strive to run their own business. The freedom and the control make it worth the many frustrations you will encounter.

One big frustration you will soon discover is those very nasty quarterly tax payments. Today, June 16th, is the due date for every one's second quarterly tax payment. Whether you know your income for the year or whether you've made any money this quarter you still have to pay your quarterly tax. Paying your tax payment with a check that is deducted out of your bank account is blast of reality. You can easily see how much of your income goes towards running our government.

The biggest frustration you will find when writing that big check is knowing that some yahoo up in Washington is tacking on a pork barrel project that is about to waste every penny you've worked hard to earn. I believe everyone should pay their fair share of taxes but the question then becomes what is fair. Many people in our country live off the welfare roles and never pay a cent of taxes. Others cheat and still others complain that we don't pay enough. If you don't think we pay enough taxes, especially the "rich", you should seek some mental counseling.

So, enjoy self-employment, but get out your pen and write Uncle Sam a big fat check. Some elected yahoo is needing the money to help build a highway to nowhere.
